We’ve
all heard Barry Meguair speak of being car crazy, but I guess
you could say, I’m ‘nitro nuts’…got
the ‘fever’. I guess you have to be car crazy
to become a nitro nut.
I did not play with dolls when I was
little, I had a RED PEDAL CAR I wore out when I was 2 or
3 years old. I remember the big red tricycle next, that was
so cool. We moved when I was 6 and remember hearing cars
racing at a drag way off in the distance. When
I was 8 or 9 I learned the ones we could hear were TOP FUEL
NITRO METHANE DRAGSTERS! Whenever we heard they were coming
to town, my brothers and I would climb on the roof of the
house to listen for that horsepower from Sacramento Raceway.
Later both of my brothers became go-cart
champions, and one went on to race circle track (Russ). We
were watching him at Roseville Raceway, supporting his dream
to race (since he was 2 years old. Runs in the family!).
Ralph Shaheen was announcing the race and asked a drag racing
trivia question to win a ticket to the inaugural NHRA race
at Sonoma California. Well to make a long story short, that
was in 1988, and we’ve made every race we could ever
since.
My grandmother had us collect autographs
when we were kids. So I started doing that at the drag races,
and met some of the nicest people at the NHRA events. I got
to meet drivers, crew members, officials, technical people,
support people, crew chiefs, sponsors, owners, the list goes
on. I’ve had the opportunity to watch kids grow up,
from cleaning car parts, to becoming champions. I’ve
watched mechanics
work together like poetry in motion. I started taking pictures
to capture and share these special moments and it has grown
into this…it is an awesome thing to see and experience. |
